Air Group 31 (AG-31) was made up of Fighter Squadron 31 (VF-31) consisting of 35 officers who flew twenty-four Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat fighter aircraft and Torpedo Squadron 31 (VT-31) comprising 8 Grumman TBM torpedo bombers which were piloted by 15 officers and their air crews.  It was a rare day when aircraft were not launched for either CAP (Combat Air Patrol), antisubmarine patrols, or fighter sweeps over enemy targets.
